Why powder coating outlasts paint

Liquid paint on a railing or a gate outdoors usually needs touching up every couple of years. Powder is baked into a single hard film bonded to the metal.

Application

A white box hanging in the spray booth in a cloud of powder.
Method
PowderSprayed on dry, then baked. It goes onto the grounded part, then flows out and hardens in the oven.
PaintBrushed or sprayed on wet.It dries as the solvent evaporates.
Thickness
PowderOne pass covers.Powder goes on thicker in a single coat, and it goes on evenly.
PaintSeveral thin coats to build the same thickness.
Solvents
PowderNone.Powder is dry until it melts in the oven.
PaintSolvent-based paint gives off fumes as it dries.

What makes it better

Durability
Powder
Resists chipping, scratching and fading.Better than paint of the same thickness, once the film is cured.
Paint
Stays a softer surface layer.Chips at edges and needs touching up outdoors.
Corrosion
Powder
Seals the surface.Moisture does not sit against the metal. On steel, rust and mill scale are blasted off first so they cannot spread under the film.
Paint
Thinner film.Every chip or scratch opens the metal to rust.
Finish
Powder
No runs, sags or brush marks.Edges and inside corners are covered by how the part is racked. Flat, matte, satin, semi-gloss and gloss, plus metallic, textured, hammer tone and clear.
Paint
Can run and sag on vertical faces.Edges tend to get less paint than flat areas.

Better for the environment

Powder coating has no solvents in it. The Powder Coating Institute, the industry’s trade group, lists what that means for the environment.

Powder coating vs paint: common questions

For a metal part that can go in an oven, yes. Powder is baked into a single hard film bonded to the metal, where paint dries as a softer layer that needs touching up outdoors.

Once the film is cured, yes. It resists chipping, scratching and fading better than paint of the same thickness.

Yes, as long as the wheel can go in the oven. Bring it as a bare rim with the tire off; bearings, studs and any rubber or plastic come off too. The wheel is blasted clean, then coated and cured.

For most outdoor aluminum, yes. Powder goes on thicker and is baked into a hard film, so it stands up to weather and handling better than wet paint.
